Today's Fertility Wisdom: Statistics
Yes, we’ve all heard the statistics…..our chances for getting pregnant naturally each month, percentage of miscarriages over the age of 35, percentage of pregnancies over the age of 40, success rate for IUI or IVF in each try. That’s a lot of numbers!! And truthfully, math is not my strong suit, so I have a hard time putting much stock into the numbers. After all, I’m a human being, not a statistic, and a unique, individual, rare human being at that. So are YOU! This is important, so pay attention closely………

As Dr. Christiane Northrup explains on her Web site, www.drnorthrup.com, “Population statistics are derived from a large group of people in all states of health. These statistics do not apply to every individual. For you, or any other individual within the population, it can actually be misleading, if not downright inaccurate. Although it is true that fertility rates in the population at large decrease with age, this often does not apply to a woman whose biological age may be far younger than her chronological age. In my opinion, telling all women over the age of 35 that they will have trouble getting pregnant is like telling everyone over the age of 50 they will get high blood pressure and diabetes — it is simply not true.”

Why is this so important to grasp, understand and practice in all your thoughts, words and deeds regarding your fertility? Because you, my friend, don’t have to become another number or statistic. With a positive outlook and a view of the whole of you, you can be the exception to the statistics rather than ruled by them. Statistics are scientific and are often helpful in informing the work of researchers, doctors and other practitioners who are in the business of assisting women who want to be pregnant. Those numbers have enabled the experts to improve procedures and practices dramatically. That’s the good part! The flip side is that the business of “infertility” treatment is just that……..a business. Therefore, statistics are used to draw in customers and to contribute to over $1 billion a year in revenue in the United States alone.
